We believe in being honest in our dealings with others and ourselves.  Honesty includes, but is greater than mere truthfulness.  Genuine honesty is acting in every way to not only avoid harming another, but to help others succeed.  Cheating for example, is not honest because it implies that others are not being given the same opportunity to succeed.  A better world, by definition, cannot be better for some while also worse for others; it must be better for the world.  Likewise lying cannot be honest as it seeks to harm others by denying them accurate information.  While lying and cheating obviously could never be excellent, honesty is more than just the absence of dishonesty: Heroes of Areté choose to actively avoid harm to others, and to help others succeed wherever possible.
