The human psyche is extremely complex as the result of millions of years of unguided evolution.  However, one trait that seemingly separates humans from most other animal life is the capacity to restrict ourselves from compulsive behavior in order to achieve greater success than mere survival.  While it is not necessarily required to deny our passionate desires, we should be able to consciously control our choices in life, whether of the ultimate significance or of the mundane.  Self-discipline does not mean never experiencing pleasure or immediate gratification, but it does mean having the control to choose otherwise when it is prudent.  Without self-discipline it is unlikely that one could master a skill or excel in one’s personal relationships.  When one meets a person of great self-discipline, one naturally has confidence in that person’s abilities and trustworthiness.
